Let’s revisit the apparently healthy turkey sandwich that so many Americans eat for lunch, taking a peak at the sodium content. I chose the products in the example as representative of what Americans buy in large-chain supermarkets.
Sodium in a Turkey Sandwich Lunch
Two slices of Safeway whole-wheat bread: 320 mg
One serving Kroger Deli Style Turkey Breast: 620 mg
Two Oreo cookies: 300 mg
One ounce Lay’s Potato Chips: 154 mg
Small apple: 2 mg
Mg of sodium for lunch = 1,396
It’s interesting that the potato chips, which might seem the saltiest item in the lunch, are actually the lowest in sodium, except for the apple. Considering that 1,500 mg per day is the sodium limit for half the population, it seems profligate to blow it all on a single meal. But since many of us don’t read labels, we’re not much concerned about all that sodium.
In a 2012 poll, about half the U.S. population (51.6 percent) paid attention to the list of ingredients on the label of a food product before purchasing it.3 The rest of us would be a lot healthier if we read labels as well. Aim to make that a practice. Anything you buy needs to be given the hairy eyeball first and rejected if it contains:
Refined carbs like flour and sugar (pick your battles; a few won’t kill you once in a while)
Bad fats: polyunsaturated oils, particularly cottonseed oil, and trans fats
Significant salt
GMOs
